What does native audio mean in Genie 4?

Genie 4 is described by Google DeepMind as its first real-time world model with native audio. The announcement includes ambient sounds and dialogue that can respond during the simulation.

That claim concerns how sound belongs to the generated experience. It does not establish that every sound will be correctly timed, physically accurate or consistent over a long session. Google explicitly includes real-time audio accuracy among the ongoing research areas.

Listen to the official demonstration

Use headphones at a comfortable volume and compare visible events with what you hear in the official Genie 4 film. A published recording is useful evidence of that example, but it is not a measurement of all possible prompts.

Notice whether a sound has an identifiable source, whether the scene’s ambience changes when the environment changes, and whether a visible person appears connected to the dialogue. If an edit or cut prevents you from following the event, record that limitation rather than filling the gap with an assumption.

Separate ambience, event sounds and dialogue

LayerExampleUseful question
AmbienceWind, distant water or room toneDoes it fit the setting over time?
Event soundA footstep, door closure or splashCan you associate it with an observable event?
DialogueA character responding to the sceneDoes the response fit the speaker and context?

These layers need different observations. A convincing background can coexist with a mistimed event sound. A coherent sentence can coexist with an inconsistent character. Avoid giving the entire experience one vague “realism” score.

A simple listening worksheet

  1. Establish a baseline. Keep the viewpoint still in a quiet setting and note the initial sounds.
  2. Choose one event. A visible door closing is easier to time than a complex crowd scene.
  3. Record the sequence. Note what visibly happens first and when the associated sound is heard.
  4. Change the perspective. Move away from the source if the interface allows it and describe what changes.
  5. Mark uncertainty. If the source is off-screen or obscured, say what cannot be checked.

This is an original suggested method. It has not been validated as a benchmark and does not supply an audio-quality score for Genie 4.

Keep a first dialogue experiment short

Choose one fictional character, one setting and one observable trigger. For example, a gardener could react to rain beginning. Keep the viewpoint stable and ask for a short response so that speaker identity and timing are easier to inspect.

Describe what you hear rather than inventing an exact transcript when speech is unclear. If multiple people are present, identify how you associated a voice with a speaker. Generated dialogue should not be treated as factual testimony from a real person.

The prompt library contains original audio and dialogue briefs, each with a listening objective. The evaluation page provides a run log for recording results.

What the announcement does not specify

Do not assume a particular sample rate, channel layout, downloadable audio stem, voice-cloning feature, language guarantee or microphone-input interface from the term “native audio.” Those details require their own current documentation.

The distinction matters when planning a workflow. Watching a recording, interacting with a world, exporting a clip and obtaining separate audio assets are different tasks. Check the actual product contract for the task you need.
